A Celebration of Multimedia and Film 28 November

The Agrupamento de Silves Sul is pleased to invite you to watch a multimedia show by the 2013/14 students of the Agroupamento on the 28th of November at 19:00 in the Centro Pastoral de Pêra.

This is  an opportunity for Rotarians and Friends of Rotary to see the short films produced by the students of Silves Sul as part of a multimedia project with  Wildern School in Southampton. The show will include the six films shortlisted for the Wildern School´ Oscars in July. Six students travelled to the UK for the ceremony and Sara Pina’s entry won the Best International Film category. The evening is a celebration of their success and the first of many events to support the continuation of the project. The evening will start with wine and nibbles and guests will have an opportunity to talk with students and staff about the impact of the project. A minimum donation of €5 per person is required to secure a seat. All profits from the event will go to supporting the second year of this exciting Digital Media Project. It is hoped to expand the project to more students and to hold the first Algarve Oscar ceremony in February. The event will be hosted by Escola Silves Sul.  Please contact info.rotarysilves@gmail.com to reserve a place or ring 919240882. Rotarians and friends gathered at the Escola in Quarteira to provide the students with an opportunity to try out their menus, table arrangements and service before the Algarve Schools Cookery Competition starts properly in January.  Three teams delighted their guests with a wide verity of food all delivered with excellent attention to detail.  The table settings were impressive, the service was faultless and even though it was the first time serving tables for some team members their nerves did not show as they went about serving the judges and guests in a professional manner.  The three, three course meals, provided were of high quality and although small improvements could be made the school certainly showed that they will be a serious contender when the competition proper in January. Local Children Enjoy School Workshop

Last week around 100 primary school children of the Silves Sul School in Armação de Pera, took part in another series of The Brothers’ Grimm Fairy Tale Workshops. During the workshops the children were shown how to make red caps, based on the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale.

A Special touring exhibition “Imagination of the Brothers’ Grimm” which had already been shown in Germany, Denmark, New Zealand and Australia, came to Portugal in March and the opening exhibition was at the Convento in Lagoa. This was to celebrate the bicentary of the publication in 1812 of the first edition of the classic Grimm Brothers’ “Children’s and Household Tales” well known in many countries and now available in over 100 translations. The Exhibition was curated by Gudrun Bartels, a founder member of the Gottinger Marchenland e. V. who had sponsored the exhibition coming to Portugal. This Association is involved in the research and history of fables and fairy tales. Local school children were invited, with their teachers, to visit and take part in   school workshops.

After Lagoa, the Exhibition moved to the Silves Sul School in Armação de Pera.

Gudrun said she was very pleased so many local children had seen the Exhibition and enjoyed taking part in the school workshops. She is now looking forward to taking the Exhibition to Lisbon and organising more school workshops. Gudrun was assisted by David Trubshaw and Isabel Flores, members of the Silves Rotary Club.

Rotary Algarve Schools Cookery Competition

The practice rounds of the Rotary Algarve Schools Cooking Competition started last week and a chance for the schools to hone up their cooking and service skills before the competition starts proper in January.  Three schools have entered teams so far from Quarteira , Almancil and Algoz and we are hopeful of a fourth entry before the end of the month.

Elimination rounds will find the best cooking and service team in each school who will then compete against each other in the semi final.  The last two will be cooking their best dishes during the final in the Conrad Hotel kitchen and the winning menu will be served at the presentation of prizes at the Conrad Hotel on the 1st April 2015.

Pies and Tarts Lunch Raises €815

Rotarians and friends of Rotary Silves enjoyed a charity lunch at the invitation of David and Sue Butler Cole last week. The lunch was a buffet of scrumptious savoury & sweet tarts from The Book of Old Tarts.  Fifty people gathered for fundraising and good fellowship in aid of Castelo de Sonhos. Guests were asked to donate at least €10 and the amazing sum of €815 was raised. The donations will purchase school materials and basic items of hygiene for the young children of Silves. These items will be distributed to the poor families registered with the charity “Castelo de Sonhos”. Thanks must go to all those who helped to raise this fantastic total and of course to Sue and her friends for all the baking.Wow €815 raised Lunch is served Always someone in the kitchen A lively crowd President Alan Winn and guests Conversation 2 Conversation

A Successful Governor’s Visit

Rotary Clube de Silves was pleased to welcome Rotary District Governor Antonio Mendes and his lovely wife Leanor to a meeting of the club on Thursday 11 September.  They spent the morning reviewing the clubs activities, membership and future plans with board members prior to attending a normal club meeting with all the members.

They were particularly interested in the clubs activities with the young of the Algarve.  The movie of the final of cooking competition organised jointly with IRC Almancil was shown and the District Governor was greatly impressed with the skills and abilities of the 15 year old entrants.  He has noted the date of the presentation of prizes in April next year and hopes to attend.  He was also very impressed by our multimedia project and we were able to show him some of the movies made by the students of Silves Sul School.  This project is also ongoing this year and we are hoping to expand it to include another Algarve school.
