16 March, Presenting Silves Sul Oscars
16 March, 20:00 Escola Silves Sul and Silves Rotary Club present the Silves Sul Oscars:
The students of Silves Sul and Wildern School (UK) are waiting with anticipation for the announcement of the winners at this first Oscar Ceremony in the Algarve. The event will take place in the Centro Pastoral in Pera. Judges which include the British Ambassador to Portugal will present the winners with the Oscars from a short list of nominees. The students have been working hard to produce work using a variety of digital media. There are nominees in categories such as Best Short Film, Best Photography, Best Soundtrack and many more. Each winner will be presented with their own statuette and a prize. Thank you to Projection Dreams for sponsoring the prizes. Students from Silves Sul will travel to the UK in July to the Wildern School Oscar Ceremony.

27 March, A Fun Night of Horse Racing
27 March 2015, A Fun Night of Racing at the Boa Vista Golf Clubhouse:
On the 27 March Silves Rotary Club will host a Race Night at the Boa Vista Golf Clubhouse, Lagos. The fun will start at 19:30. Guests will be treated to an exciting night of horse racing with a delicious fish and chip or pie and chip supper accompanied with a half bottle of wine. There will be six races and the winner of each race gets a bottle of wine. A ticket costs €15 and entrance is by reservation only. On the 14 February, members and guests enjoyed a lovely evening together at the Restaurant Ponte Romano in Silves. We would like to thank all Rotarians and friends who contributed to this fundraising event. The event total was €1000 which will go towards support for the digital media project with the Escolas de Silves Sul. Guests were entertained by Sandie and the Easy Street Band. Thanks also to Andre and Sue Winstanley, Sue and David Butler Cole, Felicity Thoet and David Trubshaw for organising such a great event.
Visitors from RC Hull and RC Hunstanton:
On the 12 February we were joined at our meeting by Robin Waite and Peter and Mary Brooke from RC Hunstanton. Alan exchanged flags with our guests. A good meeting was enjoyed by all.
Semi Finalists Chosen
The four teams have been chosen for the semi-finals of the cookery competition. The judges were again treated to delightful menus. For the semi-finals, Chefs designed a meal for the 12 judges from a fixed budget. The finalists will be known at the beginning of March as the final is on the 23 March. The 2 finalists will have to produce a balanced menu from surprise ingredients supplied by the Conrad Hotel. The winning menu will be served to guests at the prize giving held at the Conrad Hotel in 22 April. Put the date in your diary for an amazing meal.
Restaurante Pedagógico winner is chosen
This has been a busy week at the Restaurante Pedagógico as three teams competed against each other to become the representative of Quarteira School in the finals of the IRC Almancil and RC Silves cookery competition. The judges were presented with an array of good food making the judging difficult as always. After two days, team one was selected to go forward to the finals with a menu that consisted of:-
Tuna Estupeta with Strawberry and Chilli Pepper Vinaigrette
Ham and Basil Stuffed Chicken Legs on a Bed of Fresh Tagliatele and Mushrooms
Caramel Petit Gateau and Mint Sorbet

Shoeboxes for Castelo de Sonhos
Fun and fellowship: On the 11 December, Rotarians and friends gathered at the Amadeus Garden Restaurant at Alcalar for Christmas Lunch. A great time was had by all. Members also provided shoeboxes filled with Christmas goodies to be distributed to the old people of the Silves area by Castelo de Sonhos.
Amazing Mince Pies and Mulled Wine
Amazing! That is the only way to describe the amount of money raised at the Mince Pies and Mulled Wine event held at the home of Sue and Andre Winstanley. Visitors were not on treated to some delicious mulled wine and mince pies but to our surprise a whole range of savouries and other deserts as well. Thanks to the generosity of those attending in not only making an entry donation but also taking part in the raffle and tombola the amount raised was €835. Visitors had a chance to start their christmas celebrations early, enjoy good company and be satisfied that all of the money raised would be added to the growing amount to help the Oncology Association of the Algarve purchase a new mobile breast cancer screening unit.

First Trial Run for Escolas Silves Sul in Cookery Competition
Students from schools in Algoz and Armacão de Pêra prepared their first practice meals for the judges and dispite their obvious nerves, they coped well and provided a very good level of service. The simple menus were well chosen and the quality of the food was good. The judges provide valuable feedback for the teams during these practice sessions which are taking place before the start of the competition early next year. The teams of 5 are made up of 3 chefs and 2 servers and across the 4 schools that have entered this year there will be approximately 13 teams in all. The finalists will cook in the Conrad Hotel kitchen at the end of March.
Celebration of the Digital Media Project a Success
Students, parents, Rotarians and Friends of Rotary gathered to see the 16 short films produced by the students of Escolas Silves Sul during the first year of the Digital Media Project. The films included the six films shortlisted for the Wildern School´ Oscars in Southampton in July. The students that travelled to the UK for the ceremony were present and the evening was a celebration of their success. The audience were entralled by the films and astounded that the students had achieved so much with so little equipment. The evening started with wine and nibbles and guests had an opportunity to talk with students and staff about the impact of the project. This is the first of many events to support the continuation of the project and €230 was raised from donations. It is hoped to expand the project to more students this year and to hold the first Oscar ceremony on the Algarve in March. The Algarve Oscars will be hosted by Escola Silves Sul and a group of students from Wildern School will travel to the Algarve and will enter their films for the Algarve Oscars.
