Amazing Mince Pies and Mulled Wine

What alot raised

Amazing!  That is the only way to describe the amount of money raised at the Mince Pies and Mulled Wine event held at the home of Sue and Andre Winstanley.  Visitors were not on treated to some delicious mulled wine and mince pies but to our surprise a whole range of savouries and other deserts as well.  Thanks to the generosity of those attending in not only making an entry donation but also taking part in the raffle and tombola the amount raised was €835.  Visitors had a chance to start their christmas celebrations early, enjoy good company and be satisfied that all of the money raised would be added to the growing amount to help the Oncology Association of the Algarve purchase a new mobile breast cancer screening unit.

First Trial Run for Escolas Silves Sul in Cookery Competition

Team 1 Team 2 again

Students from schools in Algoz and Armacão de Pêra prepared their first practice meals for the judges and dispite their obvious nerves, they coped well and provided a very good level of service.  The simple menus were well chosen and the quality of the food was good.  The judges provide valuable feedback for the teams during these practice sessions which are taking place before the start of the competition early next year.  The teams of 5 are made up of 3 chefs and 2 servers and across the 4 schools that have entered this year there will be approximately 13 teams in all.  The finalists will cook in the Conrad Hotel kitchen at the end of March.

Celebration of the Digital Media Project a Success

The audience

Students, parents, Rotarians and Friends of Rotary gathered to see the 16 short films produced by the students of Escolas Silves Sul during the first year of the Digital Media Project. The films included the six films shortlisted for the Wildern School´ Oscars in Southampton in July. The students that travelled to the UK for the ceremony were present and the evening was a celebration of their success. The audience were entralled by the films and astounded that the students had achieved so much with so little equipment.  The evening started with wine and nibbles and guests had an opportunity to talk with students and staff about the impact of the project. Pam Winn gave a short presentation about the project to see the presentation click here http://prezi.com/embed/etm7ui2efrzq/?bgcolor=ffffff&lock_to_path=1&autoplay=0&autohide_ctrls=0&features=undefined&token=undefined&disabled_features=undefined. The Algarve Oscars will be hosted by Escola Silves Sul and a group of students from Wildern School will travel to the Algarve and will enter their films for the Algarve Oscars.

2014-11-11 14.28.55 2014-11-11 12.58.30 2014-11-11 12.58.20

Rotarians and friends gathered at the Escola in Quarteira to provide the students with an opportunity to try out their menus, table arrangements and service before the Algarve Schools Cookery Competition starts properly in January.  Three teams delighted their guests with a wide verity of food all delivered with excellent attention to detail.  The table settings were impressive, the service was faultless and even though it was the first time serving tables for some team members their nerves did not show as they went about serving the judges and guests in a professional manner.  The three, three course meals, provided were of high quality and although small improvements could be made the school certainly showed that they will be a serious contender when the competition proper in January. Local Children Enjoy School Workshop

DSC05102 DSC05101 (1)

Last week around 100 primary school children of the Silves Sul School in Armação de Pera, took part in another series of The Brothers’ Grimm Fairy Tale Workshops. During the workshops the children were shown how to make red caps, based on the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale.

A Special touring exhibition “Imagination of the Brothers’ Grimm” which had already been shown in Germany, Denmark, New Zealand and Australia, came to Portugal in March and the opening exhibition was at the Convento in Lagoa. This was to celebrate the bicentary of the publication in 1812 of the first edition of the classic Grimm Brothers’ “Children’s and Household Tales” well known in many countries and now available in over 100 translations. The Exhibition was curated by Gudrun Bartels, a founder member of the Gottinger Marchenland e. V. who had sponsored the exhibition coming to Portugal. This Association is involved in the research and history of fables and fairy tales. Local school children were invited, with their teachers, to visit and take part in   school workshops.

After Lagoa, the Exhibition moved to the Silves Sul School in Armação de Pera.

Gudrun said she was very pleased so many local children had seen the Exhibition and enjoyed taking part in the school workshops. She is now looking forward to taking the Exhibition to Lisbon and organising more school workshops. Gudrun was assisted by David Trubshaw and Isabel Flores, members of the Silves Rotary Club.
