The First Annual Rain Dance was a Great Success
The Rain Dance
The event which included Art displays by local Artists David Trubshaw and Este Andrés, a gymnastics display, drum band and a rock band was as held on Saturday 27 April at the Fontes de Estômbar. The idea to help the water shortage in the Algarve by carrying out a rain dance was the brainchild of Silves Rotary Club member Sian Elton. Sian introduced the idea of an afternoon of fun for the local communities of Lagoa and Silves in the hope that it would encourage rainy weather. Well, it worked the universe responded to the idea by raining most of the morning of the event as members began setting up. Thankfully all the rain had passed, and a lovely afternoon was had by all.
The gymnasts from Ginastica Acrobática da Casa do Povo de Messines presented a great programme demonstrating their acrobatic skills

This was followed by the Batucada da Casa do Povo drum band also from Messines. Their stimulating performance delighted the audience who were able to join in for a short drum lesson as part of the program. Claudia, who accepted an invitation to take part, later said that she felt energised and enthralled by joining the band.

The day was rounded off by the wonderful music of the Poor Man’s band who played music to dance to from the 70s to 00s.

Complimented by food, drinks and homemade cakes a great time was had by all.

The Rotary Club of Silves would like to thank the Municipal Council of Lagoa for allowing us to use their lovely Fontes de Estômbar and their help with the event. Thanks, must also go to the Gymnasts, Drum Band from Casa Do Povo and Poor Man´s Band for their support for the event. Last but not least, our sponsors Farming Futures, Florista Nativa, Rejoice be genuine and A Tasca Nova

Festival of Lights
Lagoa International Rotary Club along with Almancil International Rotary Club and the Rotary Club of Silves have organized for you a night of dinner, dancing fun and fellowship. The proceeds from the raffle go to aid the fight against domestic violence. Registration details are on the poster below. We hope you can join us.

Rubber Duck Racing
Never been tried before but RC Silves is always up for a challenge. Thirty members and friends gathered for an afternoon of fun and fundraising at the home of one of the members. They were treated to an afternoon tea and drinks whilst their rubber ducks raced to find the fastest rubber duck in the pool. Each member had a mascot duck to mark their progress through the races to the grand final.

The crowd watched in anticipation while the racing ducks took their places in the starting gate and then they were off. Fighting turbulence and adverse wind conditions they battled to the finish.

After four heats, two semi finals and a final the winner was Nicky Emms and her cross looking zebra rubber duck who managed a brief smile at the finish. In second place was Jim Kennedy with his lilac dragon duck who wore a heart on his chest throughout.

Prizes were presented by Domino and Petra from the Corridors of Peace Project. A good time was had by all and 835€ was raised in support of the Corridors of Peace project in Chad. A new focus for RC Silves.
Sunset Cruise
On the 30 September 11 members of Silves Rotary club joined RC Portimão on their Sunset Cruise. The event was in aid of fundraising to purchase a Socorro ambulance for the Bombeiros in Portimão. An exciting time was had by all if a little rough at times. The sunset was spectacular and the large waves on the return to port were well worth it. Congratulations RC Portimão on a great event.

Strings Play in Silves Theatre

Saturday 25th March was an evening to remember. A talented string quartet played an inspiring programme in front of a highly appreciative audience at a concert organized by the Silves Rotary Club at the wonderful little Teatro Mascarenhas Gregório in Silves.
The Quarteto do Barlavento gave us delightful music by Mozart, Shostakovich and Algarvean composer Cristóvão Silva. Petra Vahle-Francis joined Bernhard & Christel Schlünder, Petra Axt-Adam and Daniela Zlatkin to perform a Mozart string quintet. Three of these musicians are members of local Rotary clubs. The special ambient of this intimate theatre was a perfect venue for such delightful music.
This benefit concert raised €3.000 for the Silves Rotary Clubs educational projects in local Silves schools. These projects provide pupils with the experiences and resources to expand their knowledge of the world, to build their self-esteem and maximise their opportunities.
Thanks go to Silves Câmara for generously allowing Silves Rotary Club to use their theatre for this concert and also special thanks to The Spectrum IFA Group for their kind sponsorship.

Classic Car Rally and Christmas Swim
RC Silves worked closely with the Junta de Freguesia de Armação de Pêra and Classic Car Club of Barlavento this year to raise money to feed families in need over Christmas and the new year. The money from the raffle at the classic car rally and donations at the Christmas swim raised double that of previous years and enabled families to be fed for a further month. Thank you to all who bought tickets or donated at the swim.
