Presentation evening for the Cookery Competition 2014

The guests of honor

The Guests of Honour, Students of Silves Sul and Almancil

The Silves Rotary Club joined with Almancil Rotary Club on the 2 April to celebrate the finalists for the jointly funded cookery competition between the Schools of Silves Sul and Almancil and to officially declare the winner. Guests were welcomed at the Conrad Hotel, Almancil to be served the winning menu but this time cooked by the chef’s of the Conrad Hotel themselves. The students and teachers of the schools were present to witness the delight with which the winning menu was received by Rotarians and their guests. The executive chef Andrew  Mc Gee was surprised by the desserts of both teams and served them in combination to perfection.

Winning Menu 001Throughout the month of March,  The judges spent 6 days tasting food prepared, cooked and served by the students of Almancil and Algoz schools. They have been treated to some interesting and delicious dishes. The grand final took place at the Conrad Hotel on the 24 March. The students were presented with a black box of ingredients and ask to cook and serve a three course meal. They mastered the high tech kitchen at the Conrad Hotel and Pedro’s team from Almancil produced prawns in garlic, filet steak with spinach, potatoes and caramelised onion followed by a chocolate mousse. Erica’s team from Algoz cooked prawns in a Marie Rose and brandy sauce, filet steak with spinach and parsnip pureé and an orange desert. The competition was very close but after much debate, Algoz School were declared the winners by a squeak.

The students received personalised aprons and certificates. The Silves Sul School was presented with the trophy which they will be able to display in school for the year, alongside a replica which they will be able to keep. The runners up Almancil School also received a crystal plaque to display in school.  Both teams have been offered works experience in the Conrad Hotel.

Essential items for Castelo dos Sonhos

IMG_5282In the New Year, Alan and David Butler Cole spent a hectic morning at Lidl’s supermarket taking advantage of offers on essential items which the poor of the community lacked. The money you have donated so far this rotary year was stretched to its limits to purchase some of the basic items such as milk, olive oil, tinned sausages and juice and much more so urgently needed. Thanks to everybody who donated through coffee mornings and other events.

Your help is still needed, if you are tidying out for spring then bear us in mind as old clothes, duvets, towels and blankets are always welcome!

Cake Glorious Cake

Coffee and CakeThe Rotary Club of Silves Coffee & Cake morning at the home of Felicity Thoet in Alvor on 15 January was a resounding success. Thirty people enjoyed coffee and cake donated by Rotarians and friends with many purchasing the remainder to take home for tea. It was a lovely opportunity to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. With donations, cake purchases and a cheeky game of Heads and Tails, €250 euros was raised in aid of Castelo dos Sonhos. Thanks must go to Felicity for the use of her home and to all the cake bakers who made this event possible.
More Coffee and Cake Mornings are planned.

Watch this space for further information.

Christmas Walk

River CrossingLunch2Rural IdyllPresident and Walkers on the Roman Bridge

Christmas Walk 2013

Walkers gathered at Paderne to enjoy a lovely walk in the sunshine. A wonderful way to start the festive season joining  with friends in stroll around our beautiful Portuguese countryside whilst supporting charities in Loulé and Silves who do an amazing job collecting and distributing food around the needy of the Algarve.

The walk was a gentle 6kms in length on tarmac roads, tracks and paths.  During the walk we visited, Paderne’s Moorish Castle on its promontory overlooking the Ribeira de Quarteira together with an ancient Roman bridge, the remains of a water mill and a well preserved bee-hive faggot oven. The walk started at the Public Laundry “Antigo Lavadouro Publico Paderne”and was followed by a traditional Portuguese lunch at Paraiso do Algarve.

Walkers suggested to get together again in the Spring when the spring flowers and orchids will be at their best.
