Baby Clothes for Castelo dos Sonhos
This charity is always close to our heart at RC Silves. They struggle each year to support the local community especially those newly born. Stewart Smith and his partner Linda have coordinated a collection this year of baby clothes, cots and high chairs both here and in the UK with the support of RC ? The equipment was delivered to Lilliana Rodriques at the charity’s headquarters in Silves. Much to the delight of the Castelo de Sonhos team.
And in preperation for Christmas Paulo the Penguin is delivered…
Fundraising Dinner
Silves Rotary Club started its fundraising year with an enjoyable evening of food, wine and friendship at the home of past president Alan Winn in Salir.
The event raised 420€ for the digital media project and school exchange. Guests were treated to a four course meal with a choice of main and dessert. Thanks must go to also to those who could not attend but gave a donation. We have some way to go yet to hit the funding target but we are on the way. The date for the Agrupomento Escolas Silves Sul Oscars has been confirmed for March 14 2016 and students from the UK will be joining us at the event.

The evening will start with drinks and canapés before guests are treated to an uplifting programme of music by the Sonora Saxophone Quartet. The programme is similar to our sell out saxophone concert in 2013 where the artists performed a mixture of classical and contemporary music.
Programme
J.S. Bach – Concerto Italien
J.B Singelé – Premier Quatuor pour Saxophones
George Gershwin – Rhapsody in Blue
Intermission (20 minutes)
Piazzolla – Historie du Tango
Dvorak – Amerikanisches Quartett
Tickets will be available shortly for a minimum donation of €15. For those of you who have supported and enjoyed these events before, this is a date for the diary for you and your friends. This is definitely one not to miss! Contact info.rotarysilves@gmail.com to reserve a ticket.
Success in Southampton
Again, this year staff and students from the Silves Sul Group of schools visited Wildern School in Southampton. The 6 students had entered their multimedia work into the Wildern School Oscars as part of a school exchange project organised by the Silves Rotary Club. Staff stayed with Rotarians and teachers in the Southampton area and the students were hosted by the families of pupils at the Wildern School. They set off at midnight on the 10 July on their adventure travel ling to Southampton via Lisbon.
On their arrival the students toured the school and were introduced to their host families. Following some free time with families, the staff of Wildern School hosted a BBQ on Sunday afternoon. The British weather did its best to dampen spirits but all had a good time.
On Monday the students shadowed their hosts, taking part in lessons before getting ready for the Oscar Ceremony.
Three Portuguese movies were short listed and Irena Sendler, a movie about the heroics of a women who saved many Jewish lives during the second world war, won the Best International Film category. The movie was submitted by a group of Silves Sul students, and won against very strong competition from their fellow students. Along with the Oscar and much to the surprise of the students another camera was awarded to the school in recognition for their outstanding work.
We will be raising funds again this year in support of this project which continues to inspired Silves Sul pupils and offers them life changing educational opportunities
Handover Lunch 3 July 2015
Handover Lunch 3 July: Rotarians, friends and guests enjoyed a lovely meal and a happy time reviewing the past year with their outgoing president Alan Winn and welcoming the new President Bart Von Linden at the Bellavita Restaurant in Galé. Alan thanked all members for their hard work over the past year providing the three F’s, Fellowship, Fun and Fundraising. The money raised this year had without doubt “Changed Lives”. The Incoming Governor for 2016/17 Abilio Lopes offered both Alan and the club congratulations on a successful year. The Members of Silves Rotary were also joined by past, incoming and new presidents from other Rotary Clubs across the Algarve, who added their congratulations. Last but not least João Antunes presented RC Silves with a certificate, one of only three awarded in the Algarve for “ Fazer O Rotary Brilhar”, “Making Rotary Brilliant” which was signed by the District Governor and the RI President Gary Huang.
RC Silves would like to thank all those Friends of Rotary who supported our events and helped us to achieve our goals. We could not have done it without you. We will endeavour to provide you with more fun next year with our new President Bart Van Lindon and Vice President Sheena Rawcliffe.
Cookery Competition Presentation Evening
Cookery Competition Presentation Evening:
It was student chefs and waiters who were the stars at a Rotary Gala Dinner
at the Conrad hotel. The students from Escola Dra Laura Ayres in Quarteira and Escola EB 2/3 Dr Antonio de Sousa Agostinho in Almancil were this year’s finalists of the Annual Rotary Cookery Competition. The 2014/15 competition was organised jointly by Peter Hinze of Almancil International Rotary Club and Alan Winn of the Silves Rotary Club. The competition started last November and 12 volunteer judges ate a total of 28 meals. The final was held at The Conrad Hotel in April with the finalists preparing their meals in the Conrad’s own kitchen with ingredients kindly donated by the hotel. “It was very close this year” said Alan Winn “but we had to make a decision and declared the team chosen from the Quarteira school the winners with the Almancil team coming a close second”. The winning team received their trophy at the Gala dinner with personalised aprons presented to both teams. Accompanied by some of their teachers and families and attended by more than 80 Rotarians and guests, it was plain to see how proud they were.
Marta Castanheiro holds the trophy for the winning school with Peter Hinze
and Alan Winn.
A Fun Night of Racing at the Boa Vista Golf Clubhouse:
Race sponsors, horse owners, RC Silves members and friends met at Boa Vista Golf Club on the 27 March for an exciting night of horse racing in aid of Castelo de Sonhos. Guests were treated to a traditional supper of fish and chips whilst they placed their bets and cheered on their horses. After 8 races €650 was raised towards a newer minibus for Castelo de Sonhos. We thank all those who supported the event and the fundraising committee for all their hard work. A good time was had by all.
