Castelo de Sohos is a charity that provides much needed help for the poor of the Silves Council area. This includes social care, food (with support from Banco Alimentar), clothes personal hygene products and other much needed items for those living in hardship. Castelo de Sonhos has been supported this year by the Silves Rotary Club and the €1000 from the two clubs, along with a 10% much appreciated donation from Continente Supermarket in Guia, was the latest contribution to this very worthwhile cause.

Triumphant Return

Students Return

Staff and students from the Silves Sul Group of schools have now returned from their visit to Wildern School in Southampton.  6 students had entered their multi media work into the Wildern School Oscars as part of an exchange organised by the Silves Rotary Club.  Staff stayed with Rotarians in the Southampton area and students were hosted by the families of pupils at the Wildern School.  The movie about the emancipation of women submitted by Sarah Piña won the Best International Film category against very strong opposition from her fellow students.  Along with an Oscar Sara also won movie camera

Much to the surprise of the Algarve visitors another camera was warded to the school in recognition for their outstanding work.  This was received on behalf of the school br Dr Carlos Silva the principal of Escola Agrupamento Silves Sul.   Whilst students attended lessons along with their hosts, staff had a chance to share expertise with their UK counterparts.  Dr Carlos also spent a very useful 40 minutes with the head teacher at Wildern and an agreement was reached to have further cooperation between the two schools.

The visit was a success on many levels with the students making new friends and experiencing family life in the UK, and staff having an opportunity to look at different methods and approaches to teaching and learning.

All this would not have been possible without the support of all those who attended fundraising events organised by the Silves Rotary Club, the help of the Hedge End Rotary Club members in Southampton and the personal donation given by their Past President, Rosemary Hall.

Off to the Oscars

Leaving for the trip

An excited group of students and teachers gathered at Faro airport on friday 11 July to depart on their Oscar adventure in the UK. The students have been working on film and digital media project at Silves Sul School and their movies were entered into the Oscars at Wildern School in Southampton. Six films have been shortlisted and they will find out whose has been chosen as number one at the ceremony on Monday 14 July. The event is well known in the UK but this is the first time that students from other EU countries have submitted entries. Silves Rotary President Alan Winn is accompanying the students and will be awarding the Oscar for Best Animation. Silves Rotary Club has raised funds to enable the  student and teacher exchange and to purchase resources for the students to use. It is hoped that the students will become digital leaders in this area and mentor other students across the Algarve. Watch out for the Algarve Oscars next year!

We will publish the result as soon as we know it.

A Happy Handover

Flag ceremony

On Thursday last week Silves Rotary Club held its Handover Lunch at the O’Barradas Restuarant near Silves. Rotarians, friends and guests enjoyed a delightful meal and a happy time reviewing the old year and welcoming the new one. Alan Winn President for 2013/14 will continue as President for 2014/15 at the request of club members who feel that they want to consolidate the progress made this year into the coming one. Alan thanked all members for their hard work over the past year. The progress made in raising the profile of the club and Rotary whilst  increasing the fundraising was down to their hard work. The Incoming Governor for 2016/17 Abilio Lopes offered both Alan and the club congratulations on a busy year.  Members of Silves Rotary were also joined by past, incoming and new presidents from other Rotary Clubs across the Algarve, who added their congratulations.

Amendoeira Golf Day Success

Amendoeira Golf Resort

Amendoeira Golf Resort

15 June 2014 Charity Golf Tournament Amendoeira Golf Resort:

The golf day at the fabulous Amendoeira Golf Resort took place on the hottest day of the year so far, however, that did not prevent golfers of all abilities turning in some very good scores on the difficult Faldo course.  Comments from golfers included “a great day for a good cause” as they tucked into a very nice lunch in the clubhouse after the game.  Although with fewer numbers than expected a very respectable €1800 was raised to be used to help the Oncology Association of the Algarve with their cancer prevention programme.  Grateful thanks to all who helped organise the event and those too who took part.

Looking forward to next year!

Members felt encouraged that their funding and the efforts of the students of Silves Sul would provide opportunities and experiences which would impact on their future success.

Following a tour of Silves Sul School, Kate and Charlotte were treated to a private showing of the films the students have prepared for entry into the oscars at Wildern School in July. They were impressed with the films they saw and look forward to their entry. It is hoped to take a representative group of students and staff to the Oscars event in the UK.

All in all a successful visit.

Essential items for Castelo dos Sonhos

IMG_5282In the New Year, Alan and David Butler Cole spent a hectic morning at Lidl’s supermarket taking advantage of offers on essential items which the poor of the community lacked. The money you have donated so far this rotary year was stretched to its limits to purchase some of the basic items such as milk, olive oil, tinned sausages and juice and much more so urgently needed. Thanks to everybody who donated through coffee mornings and other events.

Your help is still needed, if you are tidying out for spring then bear us in mind as old clothes, duvets, towels and blankets are always welcome!
