Mexican Train
Easy to Learn and fun to play. One of the most popular domino games played in the world today. We will be holding a Mexican Train event at the Holiday Inn on 3 February at 15:00. Each player plays a chain of dominoes called a train; they may also play on the common chain called the Mexican Train. The player with the lowest points score at the end of the game wins. There are many events along the way that block the trains and make for an exciting game. Bring friends and join visitors to the Holiday Inn for some fun. A minimum donation of €5 is requested for a Mobile Breast Screening Unit for Associação Oncológica do Algarve. Email: info.rotarysilves@gmail.com
Essential items for Castelo dos Sonhos
In the New Year, Alan and David Butler Cole spent a hectic morning at Lidl’s supermarket taking advantage of offers on essential items which the poor of the community lacked. The money you have donated so far this rotary year was stretched to its limits to purchase some of the basic items such as milk, olive oil, tinned sausages and juice and much more so urgently needed. Thanks to everybody who donated through coffee mornings and other events.
Your help is still needed, if you are tidying out for spring then bear us in mind as old clothes, duvets, towels and blankets are always welcome!
Cake Glorious Cake
The Rotary Club of Silves Coffee & Cake morning at the home of Felicity Thoet in Alvor on 15 January was a resounding success. Thirty people enjoyed coffee and cake donated by Rotarians and friends with many purchasing the remainder to take home for tea. It was a lovely opportunity to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. With donations, cake purchases and a cheeky game of Heads and Tails, €250 euros was raised in aid of Castelo dos Sonhos. Thanks must go to Felicity for the use of her home and to all the cake bakers who made this event possible.
More Coffee and Cake Mornings are planned.

Christmas Walk
Christmas Walk 2013
Walkers gathered at Paderne to enjoy a lovely walk in the sunshine. A wonderful way to start the festive season joining with friends in stroll around our beautiful Portuguese countryside whilst supporting charities in Loulé and Silves who do an amazing job collecting and distributing food around the needy of the Algarve.
The walk was a gentle 6kms in length on tarmac roads, tracks and paths. During the walk we visited, Paderne’s Moorish Castle on its promontory overlooking the Ribeira de Quarteira together with an ancient Roman bridge, the remains of a water mill and a well preserved bee-hive faggot oven. The walk started at the Public Laundry “Antigo Lavadouro Publico Paderne”and was followed by a traditional Portuguese lunch at Paraiso do Algarve.
Walkers suggested to get together again in the Spring when the spring flowers and orchids will be at their best.
School Visit
Silves Sul visit the UK: The visit of Dalila, João and Isabel to Wildern School went especially well. They had time to see how new technologies are used in the UK curriculum and talk to pupils about Wildern TV so that Silves Sul TV can follow. The team returned with enthusiasm and many interesting ideas. They made friends at the school and are looking forward to teachers from Wildern School coming to the Algarve in April. Wildern School was equally enthusiastic about the visit so much so that the story was covered in the Southampton Daily Echo and the headteacher’s blog.
