Success in Southampton
Again, this year staff and students from the Silves Sul Group of schools visited Wildern School in Southampton. The 6 students had entered their multimedia work into the Wildern School Oscars as part of a school exchange project organised by the Silves Rotary Club. Staff stayed with Rotarians and teachers in the Southampton area and the students were hosted by the families of pupils at the Wildern School. They set off at midnight on the 10 July on their adventure travel ling to Southampton via Lisbon.
On their arrival the students toured the school and were introduced to their host families. Following some free time with families, the staff of Wildern School hosted a BBQ on Sunday afternoon. The British weather did its best to dampen spirits but all had a good time.
On Monday the students shadowed their hosts, taking part in lessons before getting ready for the Oscar Ceremony.
Three Portuguese movies were short listed and Irena Sendler, a movie about the heroics of a women who saved many Jewish lives during the second world war, won the Best International Film category. The movie was submitted by a group of Silves Sul students, and won against very strong competition from their fellow students. Along with the Oscar and much to the surprise of the students another camera was awarded to the school in recognition for their outstanding work.
We will be raising funds again this year in support of this project which continues to inspired Silves Sul pupils and offers them life changing educational opportunities

Cookery Competition Presentation Evening
Cookery Competition Presentation Evening:
It was student chefs and waiters who were the stars at a Rotary Gala Dinner
at the Conrad hotel. The students from Escola Dra Laura Ayres in Quarteira and Escola EB 2/3 Dr Antonio de Sousa Agostinho in Almancil were this year’s finalists of the Annual Rotary Cookery Competition. The 2014/15 competition was organised jointly by Peter Hinze of Almancil International Rotary Club and Alan Winn of the Silves Rotary Club. The competition started last November and 12 volunteer judges ate a total of 28 meals. The final was held at The Conrad Hotel in April with the finalists preparing their meals in the Conrad’s own kitchen with ingredients kindly donated by the hotel. “It was very close this year” said Alan Winn “but we had to make a decision and declared the team chosen from the Quarteira school the winners with the Almancil team coming a close second”. The winning team received their trophy at the Gala dinner with personalised aprons presented to both teams. Accompanied by some of their teachers and families and attended by more than 80 Rotarians and guests, it was plain to see how proud they were.
Marta Castanheiro holds the trophy for the winning school with Peter Hinze
and Alan Winn.
