Another week closer to the challenge and the final training walk is complete. Walk leader Philippe has organized all sections of the walk to get the Silves Rotary Club 10-member team fit for the challenge. On October 10, members of the Rotary Club of Silves will embark on a gruelling 110km, 7-day trek from Monchique to Cabo de São Vicente. Last week the last 7km walk from Sagres to Cabo Sao Vincente was tested by our oldest walker, Jim.

Jim, aged 83 years, suffers from knee pain and walks with some difficulty. Many thought Jim would not take up the challenge, but no! Jim is aiming to walk with the team from Monchique to Cabo Sao Vincente. Why? Because since joining Rotary Jim has become aware of the need in the Algarve in the local community, especially amongst the very young, which often goes unnoticed by the holiday makers and expats who live a more privileged lifestyle. Many families in the Algarve cannot afford the essential early intervention services their children need to thrive. RC Silves is stepping in to bridge that gap.

The upcoming trek is no easy feat—the terrain is tough, and while many of the participating hikers are over 75, their determination is unshakable. Recent practice walks in severe heat proved demanding, but the team is pushing forward with more training sessions.
