Final Meeting of the Summer in our Garden of Eden
This was our last August evening meeting – again in Isabel Flores idyllic garden of Eden.
A goodly gathering of our own members present plus visitors from IRC Almancil and Lisbon – we were 23 in all. A magnificent dinner was magicked up by Isabel, accompanied by a talk by Christina Pimenta on the Templars in Portugal.
Did you know there were Portuguese Templars here for a couple of centuries?
The flag ceremony was held with customary pomp.
We wound up the meeting with the traditional “heads and tails” and here is Jan Hinze looking for her tail.
We will have saudades of Isabel’s hospitality when we return to The Holiday Inn on the 12 September.
Anne and Alison Join RC Silves
RC Silves welcomed Anne Officer and Alison Boardman as new members. Anne and her husband are spending more time in the Algarve and are looking forward to working with new friends to benefit the local community. President Sheena Rawcliffe presented her pin and congratulated Anne. Her proud husband eager to take a photo for the family album.
Alison Boardman has long been a Rotarian and has transferred to RC Silves as she is making her home here in the Algarve. Alison’s fondness for music has the RC Silves meetings a lively affair. If you enjoy a good sing song come along.
Rotary Silves Wine Tasting
At our garden meeting on August 8, we invited our Silves sommelier Andreia Ferreira to join us and introduce some very special Algarve wines. Some of us are not avid rosé drinkers

but Andreia came up with an excellent dry Herdade dos Pimenteis

which was very much to our taste. As we savoured Isabel´s delicious cataplana, we were enchanted by the Allmagarve dry white and then their red wine. Colin can be seen studying his stomache contemplating one last dish.

We wound up with a glass of Algardoce an Algarvean wine-port. The effects of all the tasting can be seen clearly on Alan’s face in the banner ceremony afterwards.

Welcoming two new members
RC Silves welcomed Rainer Kroth and Marion Kitzmann as new members. They have recently moved to the Algarve and are looking forward to working with new friends to benefit the local community. President Isabel Flores congratulated Marion after she received her pin from Alan Winn, Vice President.
Rainer accepted his pin from David Trubshaw and visiting Rotarian Joäo Alves from RC Praia de Rocha.
Isabel has known Rainer and Marion for many years and is pleased to welcome them to RC Silves.
Rotary Silves Handover
On June 27th, we gathered at Isobel Flores house in Silves to celebrate the handover of the presidency for this coming year. And what an enjoyable and relaxed evening it was. There were 51 of us present sitting in Isobel’s lovely garden with her swimming pool as a backdrop.

Here we are meeting and greeting.
Isobel setting out her objectives for the year – Education! Education! Education!

The surprise of the night was the musician, Cristiano Sax, brought by Jan and Richard. They found him playing in the square in Ferragudo. What an inspired choice! He had us all up dancing in no time.

Then when we were all well fed and oiled, there was time to pose in the sunset for a group photo.

Thus we launched Isobel on what promises to be an exciting Rotary year.
Baby clothes and much more!
Friends of Rotary, Linda Clark and her daughter Helen have been busy in the UK collecting baby clothes, bottles, toys and bedding; a travel cot and a high chair. Altogether 8 crates of goodies arrived from the UK organised by Stewart Smith RC Silves. This was supplemented by extra bedding form new Silves Rotary Member, Anne Officer. You can imagine the delight of those at Castelo do Sonhos when delivered by Sue Butler Cole. A Rotary team effort which was happily received.

Portuguese Students Return
The Wildern exchange went extremely well with all staff and students enjoying the trip. There were many tears from the students as they parted from their new friends on the last day but they all vowed to keep in touch and greet the English again at the Silves Sul Oscares in March 2018.
The pupils attended the Wildern School Oscars and collected The Best International Film Oscar which was won by a promotional film of the Algarve and the makers were complimented on their costumes to support the Algarve history segments in the film.

On the 29 June we celebrated our Presidential Handover at O Barradas Restaurant near Silves.
